3 Things We Learned from the Angels’ 5-0 Victory Over Oakland

Light that baby up! The Angels win another in Oakland, as they blanked the Athletics by the score of 5-0. Garrett Richards tossed 4 ⅔ scoreless innings while JC Ramirez tossed 2 ⅔ innings of scoreless ball to relieve Richards and Jose Alvarez. Kole Calhoun had three hits and Mike Trout and Danny Espinosa had two RBIs apiece.

Here are three things we learned from Wednesday’s victory:

  1. All was not right with Garrett Richards, yet everything was at the same time

When Garrett Richards announced he was going to pitch at 85% effort this season, I thought he would produce 85% of the results. Diet Garrett is just as good as regular Garrett. The 85% mentality proved to be effective. He tossed 4 ⅔ scoreless inning until his start went sour. Richards exited the game with a right arm injury and everyone assumed the worst. Turns out Garrett’s bicep was barking and he was pulled as a precaution with cramps. While he was effective, Garrett threw a lot of pitches. He left with 76 under his belt. If Garrett wants to pitch deep into games, he has to find some control as he threw just 49 strikes.

2. The bullpen figured out how to pitch

After Richards exited the game early, there were two main concerns I had: how hurt was Richards and how were the Halos going to close out the game? Well, both turned out to provide better than expected answers. The bullpen did a superb job eating up the last 4 ⅓ innings of the ballgame thanks to strong outings from JC Ramirez, Jose Alvarez, and Yusmeiro Petit. The three combined allowed no runs on three hits to finish off the game.

3. The bottom of the order can hit after all

The bottom four hitters in the Halo order proved they can hold their own tonight. Cameron Maybin, Andrelton Simmons, Danny Espinosa, and Martin Maldonado combined to go 5-for-14 with three RBIs. Espinosa had two hits, including a two-run single, as he continues to show his weak spring was nothing but a fluke.

Tyler Skaggs will man the bump tomorrow against Andrew Triggs in the series finale.
