Albert Pujols Offering Hope for a Strong Season.

Updated: March 13, 2017

Not too long ago, there was concern that Angels‘ slugger Albert Pujols would miss the start of the season. It’s not an over-exaggeration to say that there was real concern regarding yet another Pujols’ foot injury. Big Albert has been a force in the lineup for years and years, but at his age, foot injuries could be debilitating to a player not blessed with speed to begin with. Was Albert getting ready to take the plunge? Was he ready to suffer a seriously steep decline in his production, or worse, a season full of injuries? Well, Albert made his Spring Training debut much faster than expected, and has looked great.

Instead of wondering all Spring long whether Albert would truly be healthy and productive this season, we’re seeing a strong and healthy Pujols. In his second game back, Albert doubled and later scored on a passed ball, and suffered no ill effects from running around the bases. Today, Pujols hit his first home run of the Spring, and now we can begin thinking about having a productive Pujols, which is a very welcome sight for the Angels. The Angels have the makings of a decent lineup, but if Pujols is not healthy and contributing, that lineup becomes a whole lot less formidable.

It’s obvious that the hopes for the Halos this season hinges upon their pitching staff, but if you’re looking for a position player who is going to be a huge key to this season, look no further than Albert. Mike Trout needs help, and though you can envision strong seasons from Kole Calhoun and C.J. Cron, neither of them is truly as impactful as Albert can be in the middle of the lineup. The Angels are going to need solid, consistent seasons from a lot of players, but a season like the from Pujols means a lot to this team, and he’s off to a great start so far this Spring.
