Alex Meyer to Make First Start of the Season This Friday

Alex Meyer will make his first start of the season for the Angels this Friday at home against the Blue Jays. According to a Tweet by Angels’ beat writer Jeff Fletcher, this is just a spot start to give an extra day rest to the other pitchers.

Meyer has made three starts for the Angels’ triple-A Salt Lake Bees this year giving up eight earned runs in 15 total innings for three no-decisions.

Not exactly the numbers the Angels were hoping for from the 27 year old righty but impressive is Meyer’s 18K/5BB ratio. If Meyer’s continues to gain better control on his pitches (something he has battled his entire career), it will now be interesting to see if his pitches are good enough to miss some bats and get outs.

For almost his entire career, Meyer has been fighting injuries to his shoulder so this spring he worked on changing his delivery in hopes to reduce some stress on his shoulder. If he is able to pitch well and stay healthy (I guess that’s the goal of every pitcher), this spot start may turn out to be a tryout for a permanent spot on an injured and underachieving Angels’ pitching rotation.
