Alex Meyer’s Rotation Hopes Take Big Hit (and Some Other Game Notes.)

After stringing together a couple solid starts and bolstering his rotation hopes for the Angels, Alex Meyer suffered yet another set back after struggling against the Texas Rangers. Meyer gave up five runs in only two innings pitched, and at this point is a long shot to make the rotation to start this season. Meyer is most likely slated to open the season in Triple-A, which has to be considered a disappointment at this point in his career. Meyer could be something special, but time is running out for him to prove it. Speaking of the rotation, Garrett Richards is penciled in to start March 31st against the Los Angeles Dodgers, which would appear to take him out of the running for the opening day spot. As of now, it appears that Matt Shoemaker will get the job.

Luis Valbuena was injured yet again, leaving the game early with a tight hamstring. It’s even more concerning considering it’s the same hamstring that required season-ending surgery last August, and Valbuena has been mostly injured this season. It doesn’t help his case much that C.J. Cron and Jefry Marte have done nothing but rake all Spring long. After Valbuena found himself in what seems like the Angels Opening Day lineup, it’s obvious that the Angels still consider Valbuena ahead of Cron on the depth chart. That won’t last much longer if Cron carries his momentum into the season and Valbuena continues to struggle, get hurt, or both.

Andrelton Simmons returned to the team after playing in the World Baseball Classic, and the Angels have their full complement of players available to them now as Spring Training winds down. Mike Trout, Ben Revere, Eric Young, Jr., and Marte all homered today in their respective games, (Revere and Marte were playing in the second part of today’s two split squad games for the Halos,) and the Angels bullpen pieces continue to pitch well, as Blake Parker struck out all five batters he faced and Cam Bedrosian continued to be solid. Who’s ready for the season to start!?
