Angels Acquire C Maldonado, RHP Gagnon for C Bandy

The Angels have acquired C Martin Maldonado and minor league RHP Drew Gagnon from the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for C Jett Bandy.

Maldonado, who was originally drafted by the Angels in 2004 and signed by Milwaukee in 2007, is an above average defender and a great pitch framer. He has had five seasons where his dWAR was at least 0.9. He also gets on base at a decent clip, as he had a .332 OBP last season, but Maldonado is not known for his bat.

He has hit .217 over his career and has only had one season where his batting average exceeded .250. While Bandy is also a good defender and a better hitter, Maldonado gives the Angels a needed veteran presence at the position while also giving them a controllable catcher, as he is under team control for two more years. Maldonado will most likely be option 1B to Carlos Perez. If Maldonado can raise his average a bit, he could be Scioscia’s go to catcher.

Gagnon is a Long Beach State product, the second Dirtbag that the Angels have picked up this week, but is not one of note.

He has not had great numbers in the minors, as evidenced by his career 4.65 ERA, but has a good cutter and changeup in his arsenal. If he can find success with those pitches, he could end up being an early inning reliever or swingman in the majors. He will most likely find himself in the AA or AAA bullpen to start 2017.

The move upgrades the Angels defense, baserunning, and pitching depth at the expense of Bandy’s slugging and arm strength. Bandy, who had an OPS of .673 and threw out 39.6% of would be base stealers last season, will be a controllable asset for a Brewers team that has struggled to generate power over the past few seasons.

He will most likely be their number one option behind the plate. He never really had a real hold on the starting position in Anaheim thanks to Carlos Perez.

On a side note, ESPN’s Jim Bowden has all of my respect as a sports journalist, but he has clearly never heard of Yunel Escobar.
