Angels Have a Chance to Make Early Statement in Division.

Updated: April 11, 2017

A win is a win. No matter how early in the season it might be, a win in April counts the same as a win in August or September. Teams can’t control the time of year it is. All they can do is go out and play the game as best they can and try to win. That being said, a win against a division rival is even more important. Regardless of how early it is, it’s important to pile up wins agains teams within your division. Beating those teams can boost confidence and momentum going forward. Divisional wins are statement wins, and can jumpstart a contending season.

After splitting with the Oakland Athletics, the Angels swept the Seattle Mariners after a miraculous comeback on Sunday and sit in first place in the division. Now, I know it’s early, but those divisional wins count, they aren’t going away just because it’s early. The Angels now welcome the Texas Rangers to Anaheim with a chance to continue staking their claim for the division. After this series and a series against the Kansas City Royals, the Angels head to Houston to take on the Astros. Series wins against the Rangers and Astros, considered the class of the division, could give the Halos a significant boost at this early point of the season. On paper, those two teams are the best in the division. Showing that the Angels can hang with them would be a great sign this early in the season.

The Angels have a chance to make a real statement if they can win four or five of those six divisional games. It’s too early to attach too much importance to any one game or series, as I’m sure Mike Scioscia will tell you. It’s more important for the Angels to put together a strong month and go from there. They’ve notoriously been slow starters, so putting together some big wins at this early point of the year could be huge for their chances this month. Big wins against teams within the division would still be huge for confidence and morale, though, especially after the season the Angels just had. Nobody is giving the Halos much of a chance to make noise in this division, but they have a chance to make an early statement as contenders.
