Why do the Angels suck on Opening Day

Updated: April 4, 2017

It’s just one game. There are still 161 games left. One game does not make a season. We know all the sayings, and they’re totally true. Just because the Angels lost yet another Opening Day game doesn’t mean that it’s a sign of things to come for this season.

The Angels have also lost on Opening Day to kick off what ended up being very good seasons, like in 2014, and have won opening day games for seasons that ended up not being all that great, like in 2010. All that stuff is true, but it’s also true that the Angels have made a habit of losing Opening Day games for a while now.

The Angels are  3-7 in their last ten Opening Day games, including losing the last five in a row. Why do the Angels seem to lose these games with regularity? There’s really no answer. Teams lose games all the time, and it gets overblown a bit because it just happens to be Opening Day instead of some random game in May.

If somebody went through past schedules and found out the Angels have lost a game on July seventh for seven straight years, it would be nothing more than a mildly interesting, but ultimately meaningless stat. The more troubling part is the Angels’ routinely slow starts. Even in 2014 when they won ninety-six games they were only 14-13 at the end of April, and that’s one of their best starts of the past several years.

It seems to be a trademark of these Mike Scioscia-led teams to start out the season struggling. It’s a long season, and even the best of teams will have losing streaks. You’d rather finish strong than start strong. Starting out the season already behind the eight ball does’t help, though. It would also be nice to start strong AND finish strong, but that might be asking too much.

Either way, we need to take this game for what it is; just another game. Hopefully, it’s not a sign of things to come. Hopefully, the Angels can start strong and create some positive momentum for themselves. Either way, the Angels are back again. That’s a good thing. Until they lose again.
