Angels Look To Daniel Wright To Make Spot Start

The Angels play game three out of four in their series versus the Blue Jays on Sunday afternoon. Right-handed pitcher Daniel Wright is set to go for the Halos. It will be his first start of 2017. Wright will be squaring off against righty Marcus Stroman. In three games, Stroman has put together a 1-2 record with a 4.05 ERA. Stroman has thrown one complete game this season.

Wright and relief pitcher Kirby Yates were called up earlier this weekend in an effort to revamp the pitching staff. Although this is true, there is justifiable reason as to why the pair of transactions were made.

Wright is essentially taking the roster spot that the 6-9 Alex Meyer temporarily occupied. Meyer got demoted to the minors after an underwhelming start Friday night in the series opener. Yates, on the other hand, is replacing the void left by closer Cam Bedrosian for what should only be a short stint of time. After Bedrosian pitched in the eighth on Friday, he experienced some discomfort in his groin. As a result, Cam was placed on the 10-day DL to be on the safe side of the spectrum.

Wright is pitching in place of the originally scheduled Jesse Chavez. The probability of Chavez seeing any action tomorrow decreased dramatically after Friday night’s marathon of a game. After the team ran out of relievers, Chavez had to be used as an emergency option in the 13th frame. The team did not really have a whole lot of other options that night. In view of that truth, it is precisely why the Halos leafed through their minor league options.

Wright has played in one game so far for the ball club this year. In his one appearance, the right-handed hurler tossed four innings of relief. He gave up three runs and walked three batters as well. Additionally, it is important to remember that Wright made five starts last year for the Halos as well. It is not a plethora of experience, yet it is better than nothing for the team’s sake at this point.
