Blake Parker’s Stellar Spring Lands Him Spot on Angels

Updated: April 2, 2017

When the name Blake Parker is heard, even the most loyal sports fans may not quite know who he is. He has bounced from team to team since he came into the league in 2012. The most recent teams he was a part of were the Seattle Mariners and New York Yankees last season. In 17 games last season, he posted a 4.67 ERA and collected 15 strikeouts. He had nine walks over that same span.

This year he will have a more defined role with the Angels. He will be in their bullpen, and could be a setup man for them. He was one of the very last additions to the team, and, suffice to say, the role is well deserved. According to writer Mark Townsend, the pitcher is coming off a spring training after having done something that has not been done since 1974. Over his previous five outings, every out he has recorded has been done through a strikeout. Incredible. Simply incredible.

Such a streak lands Parker at 17 straight punch outs. This is a feat that has not been accomplished in several decades. Thinking about it causes goosebumps to emerge.  Imagine for a moment a pitcher throwing a strikeout to every batter for nearly six innings of a game! That is basically what Parker has done.

The only shrimpy flaw during his streak transpired on March 25 against Arizona. During this game, he did happen to allow one hit. But, in all honesty, who really cares? The strikeout ratio is insane!

That only scratches the surface, though. It goes beyond the strikeout element. He attained a 0.73 ERA throughout the spring, allowing only one earned run in the process. The competition only hit .156 against him, too, and he only gave up a pair of walks. Thus, this suggests that his command of the strike zone is clearly there.

Although the games in spring technically hold no true value, Parker’s ridiculously high octane performance the last few times he was out there earned him a spot with the big boys. Maybe spring training does have a smidget of value, after all.
