C.J. Cron Determined To Find His Swing Again

Angels first baseman C.J. Cron has invested the last few days tinkering with his swing. The right-handed bat has not enjoyed his start to 2017. He currently sports an average that barely trickles over the Mendoza line at .208 and only has 2 RBIs so far. His slugging percentage is only .226 up this point in the season as well. Ergo, it makes sense that he is taking the time to figure things out.

It is somewhat strange to see Cron’s bat as cold as the label on a Coors Light. He was practically on fire all spring. There seemed to be quite a carryover effect from the way he played the prior year. But when the swings have mattered in the present, few of them have been impactful. Very few. Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register recently wrote about C.J.’s struggles at the plate so far. Cron took the time to reflect on said struggles and knows that he has not been producing enough as one of the club’s middle of the order presences.

“‘Obviously the swing is not where it needs to be or where I know it can be,’ Cron said. ‘I’m just trying to get the repetitions and try to find that feel that I know I’ve got in there somewhere.’”

The Halos have generally benched Cron against lefties regardless, so in a couple of these last three games not seeing him is not the biggest surprise frankly. It is nothing unconventional. Considering that Kendall Graveman is not left-handed, it is fair to presume Cron will be in the lineup tonight after a three day break of sorts. Hopefully, the time off was worth it. According to Mike Scioscia, a lot of extra time has been spent with hitting coaches to wring out the dents in his approach. Scioscia went on to remark that the dents in his swing are nothing major in nature.

“‘He understands some of the mechanical things he needs to adjust,’ Scioscia said. ‘It’s not an overhaul. It’s a simple adjustment that when he’s going well, he does. Hopefully it won’t be a long time.’”

Cron discerns that this is not the start he hoped for. Surely enough, this is not the start the organization or the fans yearned for, either. When pressed further, Cron said the following.

“‘I know it’s in there somewhere. I’m going to find it. It’s just a matter of time.’”
