Could The Angels Have The Best Defense in The MLB?

Since taking over the front office in October of 2015, general manager Billy Eppler has made defense a focal point. According to Fangraphs.com, the Angels recorded 45.5 Defensive Runs Above Average in 2016, only behind the Cubs (69), Giants (53.7) and Royals (46.5).

The Angels had the fourth best defense in the league last season. Billy Eppler has made significant upgrades over the off-season that should make the Halos defense even better. Eppler added a trio of fielders that could give the Angels the best defense in the MLB.

This off-season the Halos added infielder Danny Espinosa, outfielder Cameron Maybin, and catcher Martin Maldonado. They still have shortstop Andrelton Simmons who was acquired by the Angels during the Eppler era, and is known as one of the best defensive shortstops in the league.

The Angels also have Mike Trout and Kole Calhoun to go alongside with Maybin, which could make for one of the best outfields in baseball. According to Maria Guardoado Angels manager Mike Scioscia had this to say about the Angels defense, and what Eppler has done with the team.

“This is probably the best all-around defensive team we’ve had here,” manager Mike Scioscia said last week. “I think that’s going to be really important in making the plays you should make, and limiting extra pitches for pitchers, and things like that. I think Billy Eppler made a focused effort to upgrade defensively, and we have.”

Having a stellar defensive unit can be very beneficial to the Angels, and their pitching staff. Making routine plays, and having a strong defense will limit the amount of pitches a pitcher will have to throw. That could be helpful with both Tyler Skaggs and Garrett Richards likely facing some pitching limits.

“I think our ability to turn ground balls and make more routine outs with the range we have is going to show up,” Scioscia said. “I expect that to be a big part of the way we support our pitching is to make those plays.”
