Door Closes on Johnny G, Angels opens up for Cowart

Updated: August 20, 2016

Angels Fan favorite, Johnny Giavotella has been sent down. A shock to many as Giavotella was a spark plug for the offense any times. The slump hit Giavotella harder than most Angels putting up poor numbers, the Angels decide bring up Kaleb Cowart.

Cowart has been phenomenal throughout his minor league stint .867 OPS in last 32 AAA games. It also helps his cause that he’s a much better defender than Giavotella. His versatility to play at any position in the infield adds to his value to the team. Cowart hasn’t had much luck in the majors. Seeing his potential go down since being drafted in the first round, but we’ve seen some ugly games. If the hot hand carries he should see regular play time at third or any position at that matter.

Sadly everyone’s favorite flying Italian won’t be seeing the majors soon. Johnny G, is no longer a major leaguer. Probably the most clutch hitter the Angels have had in the 2 years we’ve seen him. Sadly, he is our worst defensive infielder. Holding a .260 batting average and a OBP just above it at .287 is sorta ugly. The hitting hasn’t been seen in a while and The lack of defensive versatility there wasn’t much to keep him on. With Pennington returning, the veteran seems to be a favorite of Mike Scioscia.

The lack of playing time seems to contribute the lack of lust from the second basemen. He never really got back into the groove of things. With Scioscia focusing on the defensive aspect of the game Johnny was the odd man out. Sad to see him go since he was the Angels clutch hitter.

That being said it’s pretty sad to say the Angels most clutch hitter is there worst second baseman. If the glove can fill its holes than Johnny G will return to the club again. Giavotella has to knock on the door again.
