Halo HQ Top 10 Prospects: We (Almost) Got It Right

Earlier today, MLB Pipeline released the top 30 Angel prospects according to their prospect analyst Jonathan Mayo. When it comes to the top ten, Halo HQ almost got it right.

Out of the top ten Halo HQ prospects, seven made Mayo’s top ten with the top two being spot on. Mayo’s list includes three of our on the bubble prospects in pitchers Grayson Long, Jaime Barria, and Chris Rodriguez. Those who missed the cut according to Mayo were David Fletcher, Vicente Campos, and Nonie Williams. Those three were listed at number 11, 12, and 13 respectively.

There are some surprises on Mayo’s list though. RHP Alex Meyer is listed at number eight, surprising for a guy who is fighting for the fifth starter spot. His biggest competition, Nate Smith, sits at fourth. Manny Banuelos, an mid-season signing, sits at number 29 even though he had a 5.33 ERA last season. 13 of Mayo’s top prospects are also right handed pitchers. This goes to show how much help is coming for the pitching corps, but also how little help is coming to the positions in the field.

The ones who are closest to contributing to the team include relievers Keynan Middleton, Eduardo Paredes, and Brooks Pounders and starters Nate Smith, Alex Meyer, and Vicente Campos. No position players are projected to debut earlier than 2018. Five players from the 2016 draft class made Mayo’s list, including three in the top ten, showing the potential this class has. Matt Thaiss is rated as the system’s top hitter and there is no real top pitcher, unless you count Smith solely based on his ranking.
