Has Jefry Marte Won A Role on The Angels?

Updated: March 15, 2017

Young slugging infielder Jefry Marte has forced his name into considerations for the Opening Day roster with his outstanding play this spring. The Halos don’t have too many spots left open, but Marte could grab one of the last bench roles on the roster.

This spring Marte is hitting .306 with two home runs and seven RBI in 36 at-bats. He’s collected 11 hits, and walked five times, with one stolen base. The only hotter hitter in Angels camp right now is first baseman C.J. Cron.

It will be difficult for Marte to find any time at first base this season, especially with the emergence of Cron this spring. Luckily Marte has experience at third base and in left field as well.

He played in 88 games with the Angels last season. Marte hit .252 with 15 home runs and 44 RBI in just 284 plate appearances. He spent the rest of the season in Triple-A, but saw much better offensive numbers once he joined the Halos roster.

The 15 homers was a huge burst of power from a player that didn’t have too much power potential in the minors. If he can bring that power bat with him to Anaheim again this season, the Angels could have a strong lineup.

Right now Marte would be an option off the bench for the Angels, but his power potential makes him a threat on offense. He posted a 1.2 WAR last season in a limited role, but still needs improvement.

While Marte’s bat looks ready for the Major Leagues, his defense still needs work. He committed six errors last season in a limited role with the Halos. It’s hard to trust Marte on defense, but his bat is ready for the next step. The Angels have a tough decision to make these last few weeks before Opening Day.
