Is Yusmeiro Petit A Steal For The Angels?

When the Angels signed veteran pitcher Yusmeiro Petit, many fans did not think much about it. Most people thought it was a depth signing, and he could be helpful if someone goes down with an injury. That is not the case as Petit has been one of the best pitchers for the Halos this spring.

Petit has pitched in two games (one start) in five innings. He’s allowed five hits, with one walk, and five strikeouts. Allowing five hits in as many innings is not great, but he’s been able to stop the runners from scoring which is a positive.

Right now Petit is battling four or five other pitchers for the fifth spot in the Opening Day rotation. We’ve seen a small sample size from Petit, but this could be a huge signing for the Halos. He has parts of nine Major League seasons in both the rotation and bullpen.

Having a swingman type pitcher on your staff is a huge plus for any organization. Even if Petit doesn’t grab the fifth spot in the rotation, if he can prove he’s valuable then put him in the bullpen. Injuries happen throughout the season and having a pitcher that can go from the bullpen to the rotation with ease is a nice asset.

The 32-year-old pitcher has only made two starts in the last two seasons, but he could be used as a starter if needed. Petit has 197 games pitched in the MLB with 58 starts. If Petit develops into a solid swingman type pitcher for the Angels, then they just got one of the biggest steals this off-season.
