Jered Weaver Done With Angels, Heading to San Diego?

Updated: February 10, 2017

Recent rumors have three-time All-Star and long time Angels starter headed to the San Diego Padres. Is Weaver’s career over as an Angel?

According to Ken Rosenthal the Padres are considering both lefty starter Travis Wood and long time Angels starter Jered Weaver. A three-time All-Star with the Angels and spent the last 11 seasons in a Halos uniform. After a frustrating 2016 campaign is Weaver moving on from the Angels?

In 2016 Weaver went 12-12 5.06 ERA in 31 starts with the Angels. The 34-year-old veteran gave up a league leading 37 home runs and allowed a career-high 209 hits. Weaver has put together some incredible seasons with the Halos, but after back-to-back down years it could be time for Weaver to sign elsewhere.

The Padres are a rebuilding team that has been linked to Jake Peavy, Travis Wood, and Weaver throughout the off-season. Looking for potential veteran arms they can use in their rotation until mid-season. Then possibly try to trade them to contenders at the trade deadline.

A move to San Diego could do some good for Weaver. Petco Park in San Diego is notoriously known as a pitcher-friendly ballpark. After giving up a career-high 37 home runs moving to a pitcher-friendly stadium is not a bad idea for Weaver.

Throughout his 11 year career Weaver is 150-93 3.55 ERA in 322 starts, all with the Angels. A return to the Angels could have been possible at the beginning of the off-season, but looks bleak now. The Halos have already added multiple starters and have eight plus starters heading into Spring Training. At this point they can’t offer Weaver a full-time starter position. It looks like Weaver’s time with the Halos has come to an end.
