LTBU: 5 Home Runs and 4 Near Cycle Completions

Monday night inter-league baseball was the setting for this showdown between Mike Scioscia and the Angels versus Bryan Price and the Cincinnati Reds. The pitching matchup was Matt Shoemakkkkkkker for the Angels against the former Oakland A, Dan Straily. Straily coming into this game did not have the best history against the Halo lineup and he looked to change that today.

The Angels would get off to a booming start with Mike Trout, Albert Pujols, Jefry Marte, Kole Calhoun, and CJ Cron all hitting a home run in the first four innings!!! The Angels had a 7-2 lead after the fourth inning. Straily on the other hand, did not make it out of the third inning after he made it evident that he  would not be the winning pitcher for the Reds today. For the Reds, the all-star Joey Votto hit a home run of his own in the first inning off of Shoemaker. The Halos would continue to cruise to victory against the Reds.

Another very impressive feat the Halos racked up tonight is having four different players being a single away from completing the cycle! They had four players with a single, double, and a home run(Trout, Calhoun, Cron, and Marte).  The Angels tacked on another run in the seventh inning courtesy of an RBI double by Marte. Jose Valdez came in to close out the win for Shoemaker and the Angels.

Tomorrow! The Angels are back at it again tomorrow with a 7:05 start. Jered Weaver is scheduled to toe the rubber for Anaheim tomorrow facing Tim Adleman of the Reds.

STRANGE BUT TRUE: Jose Valdez had an interesting ninth inning for the Angels. To start off the inning, he had a call that I have never witnessed before. Valdez was forced to switch gloves because the glove he was using was more than one color. MLB rules state that a pitchers’ glove must not be two-toned. And then also to put the icing on the cake, Valdez forgot there was a runner on base and quick pitched the batter….but a pitcher must come to complete stop with a runner on base. This was not the case with Valdez, and it resulted in a balk.
