Matt Shoemaker’s Ready to Go!

After suffering a gruesome head injury last season, Matt Shoemaker is back at Spring Training and ready to go. Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reported today that Shoemaker is feeling a hundred percent and was quoted as saying, “The way I feel right now, mentally and physically I don’t think it’s going to be an issue at all…,”  regarding his injury and how it may affect him going forward. With all the injuries the Angels suffered last season, particularly in the rotation, positive news from Shoemaker and Garrett Richards is a huge boost for the Halos at this early stage of Spring Training. The Angels will need all the help they can get, and will be relying on Shoemaker to build upon the great year he was having last season before his injury. After an abysmal start to the season, Shoemaker was sent down in May with an ERA over 9.00. After being called up due to injuries, he put together such a strong season he lowered his ERA almost six runs.

My bold prediction is that Shoemaker will end up having the best season of any of the Angel pitchers. That isn’t to say I think Richards will have a bad season, I think Richards will put together an impressive season, especially considering he’s coming off a serious injury that usually costs a player fourteen to eighteen months, and instead is pitching less than a year later. Richards will be on a strict pitch count, however, as the Angels are not going to risk Richards’ health any further. Shoemaker has shown the ability to be a great pitcher, but hasn’t quite carried that through a full season; this year, he finally does it, and will carry this Halo staff into contention. Here’s hoping the Angels’ hurlers can avoid any serious injuries, and the Halos will need that kind of luck to have a chance at contending.
