Rangers rough up Hector Santiago, Take Series

Updated: May 25, 2016

The Angels and Texas Rangers wrapped up their three game series with a Wednesday afternoon affair in Arlington. For the rubber match, the Angels sent out Hector Santiago and he was opposed by Rangers’ starter, Colby Lewis.

It was a rough outing for Santiago as he was staked with a 1-0 and 4-1 lead and could not hold either as he was pulled after two and one-third innings giving up four runs ( three earned) and was responsible for two runners on base. He was relieved by Mike Morin, who gave up back-to-back hits in relief as the Rangers were up 7-4 after three innings of play.

The Angels would claw back with runs in the fifth and the sixth to cut the lead to 7-6. The Rangers kept piling it on in the sixth, as they scored four runs off Deolis Guerra to make it 11 -6. Guerra would be relieved by Greg Mahle, who then gave up two more runs in the seventh as Texas built a 13-6 lead. In the eighth, the Angels would cut the deficit to four, as Rafael Ortega hit a three-run home run for his first MLB home run, to cut the lead to 13-9.

The Rangers would tack on two more runs in the eighth off Jose Alvarez as they now lead 15-9. In the ninth, Sam Dyson would retire the Angels in order as the Rangers held on to win 15-9 and take the series.

The winning pitcher was Colby Lewis, who gave up six runs in five innings and improves to 4-0. The loss is charged to Hector Santiago, who falls to 3-3. Both teams are off on Thursday. The Angels will head home to begin a six game home stand, while the Rangers remain home and will face the Pirates.
