Angels’ Southpaw Heaney Is 5-0

Updated: July 27, 2015

Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee…Muhammad Ali coined that phrase and many others.  “The Greatest” or “Louisville Lip” had a gift of gab.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have a young pitcher who is starting to make a lot of noise, too.

Rookie, Andrew Heaney gave the Angels a much-needed boost Sunday night.  In fact, he’s been doing it since he cracked the rotation June 24.

Heaney’s latest knockout victim was the Texas Rangers.  Heaney pitched six strong innings in navigating the Halos to a 13-7 victory.

Heaney is now an impressive 5-0 in six starts this season.  He also owns a  flyweight 1.79 ERA.

At 6’2″ 185 pounds this lefty is packing a punch in the Angels’ rotation.  In every start this season, Heaney, has pitched 6 innings or more.  He has not given up more than two earned runs in any of his starts either.

Can anyone say Heaneymania?

Interestingly enough, before the season started, Heaney was a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers.  On December 11, 2014 Heaney was dealt by the Miami Marlins to the Dodgers only to be flipped moments later in a cross-town trade with the Angels for Howie Kendrick.  Yo Adrian!!!

Heaney started this season pitching for the Angels AAA affiliate Salt Lake Bees.  He wasn’t exactly stinging minor league hitters, when he was called up, Heaney was 6-2 with a 4.71 ERA.

Although, when the ML bell rang, Heaney came out swinging and so have the Angels’ bats.  In his last four starts the Angels have averaged 10 runs a start.   Even Rocky Balboa knows 10 runs a game will put you in the winner’s circle in the majors.  But Heaney has been as sharp as any boxing cutman.  “Cut me Mick..cut me…”

A contributing factor to Heaney’s success has been his ability to throw strikes.  In 40 1/3 IP, Heaney has allowed only 5 walks and a skimpy 30 hits.  What would Thomas “Hitman” Hearns say about that?  Considering ML hitters are only batting .204 vs Heaney there’s not much to say except don’t pity him because he’s no fool on the mound, he’s ready to rummmmmmmble!!!
