The Very Latest On Richards

With Spring Training now officially underway, there is ample reason to be boisterously bouncing up and down like the rally monkey does in-between innings. In other words, it indicates that we’re one step closer to soaking in Angels baseball (finally!).

Even supposing that Spring Training has barely kicked off, some noteworthy news has come about. A snippet extracted from cbssports.com per a report from Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register conveys that staff ace Garrett Richards underwent a stress-free bullpen session today. The short article also delves into the following analysis regarding Richards.

“The right-hander is still on track to start the season, but he has said he expects to have a 100-pitch limit this year.”

Hearing the latter part of the statement may come as a bit of a downer to some souls out there, yet it is imperative to bear in mind that Richards could have had an alarming procedure no pitcher ever wants to be a part of: Tommy John surgery. Consequently, the previously echoed pitch count limit is probably the strongest path to travel down even if, hypothetically speaking, it merely occurs in the earlier stages of the season.

It is probably every bit as fair to touch on the pitcher’s overall importance, too. Despite Mike Trout easily being the best player on the club (and on the globe, needless to say), Richards could perhaps be the most essential piece to the Angels’ success once April dawns. Thus, as cliché as it is to put forward, safety is frankly the best measure to implement at the time being granted it may not be desirable from a fan’s perspective.
