Yusmeiro Petit Solid in Angels Debut.

Any Spring Training article should always come with a disclaimer: These games don’t count, and the competition is mostly very weak. Star players are not playing, and when they are it’s for a very short time. The players don’t care about the results, they only care about working on their game. For instance, in one outing Justin Verlander may not care about getting anybody out, instead he’s decided to work exclusively on his fastball and will throw only that pitch. It’s just hard to get a really good read on what a player is really capable in these situations. So there’s that!

However, these players WILL be judged on those results, and therefore they deserve some level of focus. To that point, Yusmeiro Petit is on the bubble for this Angels‘ team; on a minor league deal, he’ll have to prove he has a role and earn his spot on the roster. Petit got off to a great start today, starting the Halos’ first Spring game and pitching two innings with two strikeouts while only allowing one hit. Petit is most likely slated to end up in the bullpen, where he has been extremely valuable in his career, and the Angels are going to end up benefiting from his poor season last year by signing a valuable relief commodity who can pitch multiple innings at a time for an extremely cheap, minor league deal. He’ll have to show what he’s got first, though, and if today was any indication, Petit will be an asset to this staff that can use all the help it can get!
